This outdoor family portrait session with little 8 month old baby Sophie took place shortly after sunrise on WImbledon Common, South West London. Even as I drove to the Common I could see a layer of mist above the ground and shafts of sunlight breaking through the trees and knew we were in for some absolutely beautiful light! There might be a serious nip in the air these days, but it was well worth braving the chill for these beautiful portraits.
Child photography
Parents often ask me what is a good age to photograph their child. The milestone ages generally are; newborn, 3 month (when babies are lifting their head during tummy time, and grabbing their toes whilst on their backs), around 6-7 months (as babies start to sit by themselves) and then around 12 months - to celebrate their first year! In the colder months of the year it's usually best that little ones are aged 7 months or more for outdoor portraits. Here Sophie was dressed in a lovely cream fleecy jacket which kept her nice and snug! Soft pastels always photograph so well as they reflect the light beautifully without causing any colours to be reflected onto skin tones.

Autumn is such a wonderful time of year for outdoor family portraits - and coincides perfectly with getting organised for Christmas pressies for the grandparents! I love the soft, natural light in these photos and the sun sparkling on the drops of dew. If you look closely in some of the portraits below you can even see threads of cobwebs shimmering in the morning light! Sophie loved the bubbles that collected in the grass around her feet and these too were so pretty.
