Family portrait photographers | Autumn on Wimbledon Common

The clocks have gone back, the leaves are changing colour and the nights are starting to draw in. At this time of year my outdoor family photography, whilst remaining full of soft light and colour, shifts slightly to encompass richer, deeper tones, rather than being quite so light and airy. These sort of photos convert particularly well into dramatic black and white images, as you will see below. There is still plenty of gorgeous autumn foliage around, and the sun being so low in the sky throughout the day gives portraits a beautiful, warm glow. It also means that young children are usually still up at sunset (which is around 5pm at the moment), unlike the summer months when sunset is much too late in the evening for little ones! You really can't beat that time of day for outdoor photos. The family photos below were all taken in the last light of the afternoon on Wimbledon Common in SW London, which is one of my favourite spots, especially for Wimbledon and Putney clients and other families that live in the area. It has the advantage of easy parking and is relatively quiet compared to say, Richmond Park (another go-to spot for photoshoots), which can get pretty hectic on weekend afternoons!

The family portraits below were commissioned in honour of the arrival of little baby Ella, 10 months old. I have photographed this family a few times now, but this was the first session with their new baby! It's such a significant time - especially for older siblings adjusting to a newbie in the family. The portraits of siblings together are the photos that every parent wants to have on their wall! Whilst it is certainly challenging photographing young children together, it is always well worth the effort and so rewarding. I know this family now have an entire staircase at home decorated with my portraits of their growing family spanning the last three years. I should also say here how much I love mum Harriet's choice of knitwear for the family, which works so well in autumn, with soft textures and more seasonal colours in plum and navy. And how cute is baby Ella's bobble hat? I can't wait for my next session with this gorgeous bunch!
