Meet gorgeous blue-eyed baby Max, aged 9 months. I love simple, natural family photoshoots like these, which aim to capture baby's personality and the love between mum, dad and their little one. These outdoor baby photos were all taken in a favourite spot on Wimbledon Common in South West London.
Outdoor family photography
I specialise in outdoor family portraits for a number of reasons, the main one being my love of natural light. I adore both soft, cloudy diffused light (as we had on this shoot here), or filtering strong sunshine to create warm, sun-kissed images at the tail end of the day. Often there is not quite enough natural light in the UK for indoor photos without adding flash photography - so providing babies are old enough, outdoors is always my first choice! Another factor is that I have found kids often are more engaged outdoors in a new environment, especially toddlers and older children who do well with a bit of space to run around in. Even with babies under 12 months old there are planes going by overhead, dogs being walked to watch go by, and leaves to examine. It's lovely to photograph the smiles and looks of concentration these sort of things elicit. Max in particular loved picking up the stones on the pathways across the common! The focus of my photographs is not necessarily the locations themselves (as the background is often soft and deliberately out of focus), but I love the soft textures of the natural environment and how my subjects stand out from the gentle scenery. Outdoors can be a really lovely choice for bigger babies, aged 4-5 months onwards (in the warmer months of the year!).
I would be delighted to photograph your growing baby and have many locations to suggest around South West London and elsewhere, depending on where is convenient to you and whether you prefer ornamental gardens, or fields and woods. Max's mum was thrilled with the results of our shoot; these are some of her favourites.
