Battersea Park is fast becoming my new favourite spot for family photoshoots in London for parents living in South West London, or those living just over the river in Chelsea. It has the most gorgeous gardens full of flowers, and lots of huge plane trees, which provide some much needed shade during this scorching summer. In the past I’d thought Battersea Park didn’t have too much to offer as a backdrop to family photos, but this year I’ve come across some lovely new spots!
Natural family photography
This family was an absolute delight to photograph, with their little one, James, having recently turned one year old. They were really keen that I captured natural interaction between them all, rather than anything particularly ‘posed.’ More and more that is what I find clients are looking for - with an emphasis on stylish photos that capture connection and joy, rather than ‘perfect’ portraits of everyone looking and smiling at the camera (which is rarely that authentic!). I am really developing my love of lifestyle family photography this year, and making sure to photograph details and all the tiny, fleeting moments that happen during a session - such as a close up of James clutching his dad’s hand, or taking tentative steps by himself. These are the true moments that tell of this time in his life, and the ones that parents want to remember when they look back in the family album! Of course I make sure the photos are still beautifully lit, and full of gorgeous sparkling light and colour.
Black and white portraits
I am still in a phase of really enjoying turning my images into black and whites. Photos taken in summer convert so well, because they are bright and high contrast because of all the sunlight, which is the key (in my book) to creating beautiful black and white photos full of depth and richness, whilst still retaining lightness. They also capture mood like nothing else. Check out the black and whites further down this post.. I think they are my favourite of all!
